When setting up your email, you can choose between 2 types of email account: POP3 and IMAP.
IMAP
IMAP syncs and stores emails on a remote server, allowing access from multiple devices with any changes being made shown across every device. The emails shown in this email account will be representative of the emails that are stored on the server and will therefore take up storage space. This is ideal for users who regularly check emails on multiple devices and want the same email experience on all of them.
POP3
POP3 downloads emails to your local device and typically deletes them from the server after a set amount of time, limiting access to a single device. The emails shown in this email account will not be representative of the emails that are stored on the server and will not take up storage space (provided you've set it to delete emails from the server). This is ideal for users who want to store a lot of emails, beyond that of your email accounts storage, and instead store them on the local device so they can continue to receive emails without their storage being full.
If you're looking to set it up as POP, please make sure you keep your data file(s) secure and backed up on another storage device/server as if something were to happen to that device, your emails would be lost.
